Stand at the end of the world
President of KOPRIHo-il Yoon
Welcome to the homepage of the Korea Polar Research Institute.
The polar regions, which refer to the Antarctic and the Arctic, are places that most people think have nothing to do with them, not only because of its remoteness but also because of their harsh environment.
The polar regions are an indispensable part of the Earth’s system as a modulator of climate. However, the Antarctic and the Arctic are the most responsive regions to global warming which then could affect the global climate.
This immense natural environment, located on the Earth's polar regions, has a unique environmental system of lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and cryoshphere. This is the best place to detect and predict climate change because it is the earth’s most sensitive and responsive area to climate change.
As the political and economic importance of the polar regions grow, the scientific research on polar regions becomes more important. Therefore, with our excellent polar infrastructure - two Antarctic Stations, one Arctic Station and Araon, the Icebreaking research vessel - we are striving to make achievements in research concerning our world today.
Through this, we will be able to respond in advance to the climate change, and create future values based on top class science. We will strive to be the leading polar research institute.
We hope you will join our journey to the Polar regions.
